For those who don’t know me, my name is Denisa, and I’m the new Social Media Manager here at Chroma.
In this series of blogs, I wanted to delve into the experience of my colleagues and find out what they have learned over the years: what advice they always give, or what advice they wish they could give, but normally don’t get the chance to. I’ve picked out a few key ones for the blog, but you can find the full set on our Instagram, or if you follow #advicefromChroma.
To be clear, we do not hold the recipe for the perfect CV! Nobody can say what the ‘ideal’ cover letter looks like, or give a ‘how-to’ textbook for presenting yourself at the interview. But we have seen our fair share of CVs and been through our fair share of interview feedback, so we’ve developed a good idea of what works and what doesn’t.
All this being said, let’s get into it!
“Reference things in your personal life that demonstrate your interest in the role. If you have done something for your family or friends that helped you improve your skills, tell your interviewer about it.”
You know how they say, “Dress for the job you want, not for the one you have”? Well, we say, “Get yourself ready for the job you want”!
If you find a job you really want but don’t feel you are qualified for, do something about it. Take an online course, read some books, watch webinars… whatever you think it will take to get closer to the job you want.
Proactive candidates that prove they want to learn and grow are the ones that stand out. Skills are teachable, but passion is something you can’t force, and that will really make a difference.
There was a colleague of mine who was recruiting for a very senior management position. He had spoken with a number of good candidates, but the one he was most impressed with didn’t have all the experience of the others. What he did have was a diploma from an online course completed in order to improve himself, two books he had read around the subject, and he was an active member in various forums where they discussed the technical advances needed for the role. He took the extra step. He made sure it was up to him if he got the job or not. Needless to say, he got it!
